WAAN – Talking Trees
First Single from Upcoming Album “We Want WAAN”
After their celebrated debut Echo Echo (2023), Dutch duo WAAN return with “Talking Trees” — the first glimpse into their sophomore album We Want WAAN, due January 23rd, 2026 on Sonar Kollektiv.
With “Talking Trees,” WAAN continue to blur the lines between the electronic and organic, this time exploring the fragile terrain between trip-hop and jazz. Thick, tape-saturated drums form the base of a slow-burning, melancholic ballad, wrapped in warm synth layers, plaintive sax melodies, and the haunting textures of an EMS Synthi. As the track unfolds, cello and electronics gradually take over, pulling the listener into a deeper, more introspective space.
Inspired by the silent communication of white pines — trees known to exchange signals through an underground fungal network — the track serves as a metaphor for a world longing for connection.
“Talking Trees” was written and recorded in the serene isolation of Texel island and later shaped in sessions at Eminent Studios with longtime producer Oscar de Jong (Kraak & Smaak). Featuring contributions from Marta Arpini on vocals and René van Munster on cello, the single captures the new sonic direction WAAN have been exploring: rawer, freer, and brimming with curiosity.
The new album We Want WAAN will continue the duo’s journey into a rich, genre-defying sound world.
