The Ruffcats – I Ain’t Worried feat. Doug Shorts
“I Ain’t Worried” is a deep, timeless slice of retro soul, bringing together Berlin-based powerhouse The Ruffcats and Chicago soul singer Doug Shorts, a collaboration rooted in friendship, shared values, and a love for authentic, analog soul music.
The song was written by The Ruffcats and Doug Shorts and originally emerged in the orbit of Soul Rabbi – Shine On, a charitable compilation initiated by the late and deeply respected soul DJ Soul Rabbi. While the compilation provided the emotional and communal framework, “I Ain’t Worried” stands tall on its own: a confident, warm-hearted statement of resilience, grace, and classic soul songwriting.
The collaboration came together through DJ Robert Smith, who brought Doug Shorts (widely admired for his work with Master Plan Inc. and his connections to the extended Daptone universe) into the Ruffcats’ world. The result is a recording that feels effortlessly classic: laid-back yet powerful, polished yet raw, and driven by Shorts’ unmistakable Chicago-grown vocal presence.
Doug Shorts has been singing and writing soul music for more than four decades. Growing up on Chicago’s Near Northside, he cut his teeth in competitive harmony groups before touring with Brunswick-era soul artists in the 1970s. His voice – smooth, expressive, and deeply rooted in tradition – carries echoes of Curtis Mayfield while remaining unmistakably his own. In recent years, his work has experienced a remarkable resurgence, with sold-out 7-inch releases on Cherries Records, recordings alongside Dap-Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss, and archival releases via Jazzman Records shining new light on his extensive songwriting legacy.
Musically, “I Ain’t Worried” is anchored by The Ruffcats’ unmistakable live energy: warm rhythm section, punchy horns, and a production approach that favors feel over perfection. The track is capturing a sound that feels lifted straight from a late-’60s soul studio while remaining fully alive in the present.
“I Ain’t Worried” will later receive a dedicated 7-inch vinyl release, backed by an exclusive remix from none other than Erobique, adding a playful, dancefloor-minded twist to the original without losing its soulful core.
Rooted in community, respect, and a shared musical language, “I Ain’t Worried” is more than a collaboration, it’s a reminder of how soul music continues to connect generations, scenes, and cities when the right people come together.
