Soulphiction – Losoul & Kalabrese Remixes
Following on from his 2006 album State Of Euphoria (SK080CD/LP) and his latest long player, Do You Overstand?! (SK180CD/elektrish) SOULPHICTION aka Stuttgart man MICHEL BAUMANN brings us a fresh new remix 12″ on Sonar Kollektiv. As well as having had releases on Sonar Kollektiv and his own labels Philpot and Phil E, SOULPHICTION has also put stuff out through Perlon, Playhouse, Moon Harbour, Liebe/Detail, DIY, Mule, Resopal and Freude am Tanzen. SOULPHICTION was also represented on the recent Sonar Kollektiv anniversary compilation Ten Years Who Cares (SK150CD).
For for this single he has invited two exceptional musicians, LOSOUL and KALABRESE, to remix tracks from his new album. LOSOUL is part of the esteemed Playhouse crew along with people like ISOLEE, VILLALOBOS and LINDSTRØM. He has previously remixed SVEN VÄTH, RÖYKSOPP and ALTER EGO so knows a thing or two about remixing. For this maxi he has masterfully remixed SOULPHICTION’s swinging jazz number Cargo, slowly building things up around the lovely shuffle beat. LOSOULs mix is dance-floor orientated without losing those spaced-out synth sounds. This track is sure to brew up a storm whenever it gets played out. DJ, producer, promoter and club owner KALABRESE is one of the more glittering characters in Zurich’s music scene. Through his very own style as a producer he caused a stir outside of switzerland too and he gained attention with releases on the well-known Perlon label. DJs like LAURENT GARNIER, LUKE SOLOMON and RAINER TRÜBY didn’t stop spinning his true disco-funk-stomper Chicken Fried Rice, his tunes have been licensed for mixes by AKUFEN, DJ EMERSON and JAMES HOLDEN, his track Hide was included on Secret Love 4 and his debut Album Rumpelzirkus recently came out on Sattmusik. Also an experienced remixer, having previously done the works for IDJUT BOYS, KATE WAX and THE TAPE VS RQM, KALABRESE knows exactly how to handle SOULPHICTION’s track Reclap. It is a laid back version which brings the bass-guitar to the fore without losing the vocals so as to retain the tribal feel. MICHEL BAUMANN is open to everything. While his JACKMATE project focuses mainly on straight beats and functional house, SOULPHICTION takes in influences from hip-hop and jazz resulting in a truly experimental feel. SOULPHICTION’s productions are restrained and minimal in the right way – he doesn’t let things get too complicated. Having remixed the likes of INTERNATIONAL PONY, DAPAYK & PADBERG, EGOEXPRESS, MOVE D, SOLOMUN and EVA BE amongst others this time it was SOULPHICTIONs turn to be remixed. And he’s picked a winning pair in LOSOUL and KALABRESE who have both given the perfect treatment to tracks from Do You Overstand?! making this a winning remix maxi.
