Don Philippe – of composition
Sonar Kollektiv is proud to present “of composition”, the new single by lo-fi pioneer Don Philippe. The track offers the first glimpse into his forthcoming instrumental album Velvet Breaks, out October 10, 2025 on vinyl and digital formats.
A former professional drummer and co-founder of the iconic German hip-hop group Freundeskreis, Don Philippe (aka Philippe A. Kayser) has long been a central figure in shaping Germany’s beat culture. Since 2015, he has dedicated himself to instrumental hip-hop, releasing over ten albums that blend lo-fi aesthetics, jazz influences, and cinematic depth.
“of composition” sets the tone for Velvet Breaks — a meditative, analog-rich journey through broken rhythms and atmospheric textures. Tapping into dusty drum loops, warm tape hiss, and ghostly chords, the track captures a sense of emotional unraveling and quiet introspection.
The new album Velvet Breaks is available for pre-order starting today, with additional singles to follow throughout the summer.
Tracklist highlights from Velvet Breaks include:
“fibers displaced,” “torn,” “a rupture,” “entanglement,” and the final track “velvet is broken” – each piece forming part of a poetic narrative about fragility and transformation.
For fans of: J Dilla, Nujabes, FloFilz, Wun Two, Knowsum, and lo-fi instrumental hip-hop with soul and atmosphere.
