Alexander IV – Alchemist
With Alchemist, Dutch producer and multi-instrumentalist Alexander IV presents his debut album — a richly textured body of work shaped by jazz, soul, hip-hop, and a deep attention to detail.
Alexander IV is the alias of Joris Feiertag, known for his club-focused productions under his own name and as a member of Kraak & Smaak. Under this moniker, he shifts into a more introspective space, drawing from crate-digging culture, live musicianship, and cinematic storytelling.
Across 13 tracks, Alchemist unfolds as a cohesive journey through dusty breakbeats, warm analog textures, and layered instrumentation. The album moves effortlessly between instrumental beat work and song-driven moments, blending influences from Mr. Scruff, Thievery Corporation, and Kruder & Dorfmeister with more contemporary voices like SAULT and Khruangbin.
The record opens with “Touch of Gold”, setting the tone with a bold jazz-to-hip-hop beat switch, and continues through a series of deeply atmospheric pieces. Tracks like “All I Have to Say” lean into late-night, sample-driven introspection, while “Palau” and “La Vie” explore dubby textures and trip-hop aesthetics.
Vocal collaborations add another dimension to the album: Cézanne appears on “This Won’t Do”, Oli Hannaford lends his voice to the soulful “Time of Day”, and Pete Josef features on the Afrobeat-tinged “Long Way from Home”. On “Now, Pause…”, spoken word legend Ursula Rucker delivers a reflective moment of clarity and presence.
Throughout the album, Feiertag works closely with a circle of musicians including Luuk Hof (trumpet), Bart Wirtz (flute/sax), Darius Christian (trombone), and Robin de Zeeuw (double bass), weaving their contributions into a detailed sonic framework built from samples, live recordings, and careful arrangement.
“I took small pieces of sound and turned them into something whole,” says Joris. “Chopping, isolating drums, reversing parts, slowing things down… every element has its place.”
Alchemist is a record about process, patience, and transformation — turning fragments into something cohesive and deeply felt.
