Jazzanova …mixing
In between remixes and being remixed, we’ve decided to take the next step: do a mix cd to complete the circle. The question arises who needs dj mixes at all, the answer: Jazzanova. After years of touring and playing the planet we are a little bit tired to be put on stage and expected to perform live. Seriously, the dj / club thing is where we come from and it is still one source of inspiration for us and our music. Another reason is that many people have asked us for a mix tape and we never did one, so we’d like to present you: Jazzanova …mixing.
The structure of the mix is similar to our dj sets (warm up, prime time, “thanks, it was nice with you”). Our dj style is very much influenced by those eclectic radio sets from the likes of Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge, who put the focus on a song orientated mix rather than mixing track after track.
This mix features soulful R&B from Jill Scott, weird electronica and a lot of classics like Carol Williams and Bahamadia. A lot of tracks were exclusively produced for this mix. Funny enough, they all shake hands with each other. These exclusives are the remixes by Atjazz and Âme of Jazzanova’s “Dance The Dance” (SK025) and “Glow and Glare” (SK025). This is the first 12″ release from the cd (SK025). More fresh nuggets come from the hard discs of Sonar Kollektivs’ own Extended Spirit, Slope and Mr. Georg Levin. We also found some hard to get and unreleased tracks like Dimlite’s rarely seen “Sponsored by the Alphabet” (a limited pressing on A Few Among Others) and Dixon’s remix of “The Quest” by Attica Blues. Bridging the gaps with some nice tools is also one of our favourite pastimes. With these tools (i.e. Jazzanova “L.O.V.E. Beats”, Phoojun “Rainbow” and Oba Funke’s acapella) we can change and manipulate the athmosphere, the vibe and especially the tempo of our sets. That gives us the possibility to present an excentric mix full of our favourite ‘genre hopping’ musical variety. To round up things we’ve done a cover version of a song from Patrice Rushen, one of our all-time-favourite artists. “Let Your Heart Be Free” (SK032) features Nicola Kramer, Georg Levin and Clara Hill on vocals and is the second single release from this mix (SK032).
And this is it: it’s our taste, it’s what we do, it’s what we’re all about.
