Who ever has had the chance to witness New Zealand cult ban FAT FREDDYS DROP in concert will know what a high quality program they pack into an evening. Give them a chance and the seven piece band with singer DALLAS TAMAIRA aka JOE DUKIE and producer CHRIS FAIMUMU aka DJ FITCHIE at their centre will happily stand on stage for up to four or five hours constantly delighting the audience with extended live jams, bouncy MPC beats, crispy horn lines, the smooth vocals of JOE DUKIE and not least of all, a nice portion of self-irony. Spectators can expect a casually presented set played by a talented band who are a well rehearsed team and know well to keep a loose hold on the reins so as to even more masterfully set the high points. Long since superstars in their native New Zealand (FAT FREDDYS DROP were No. 1 in the national charts there on the strength of pre-sales alone), 2005 saw the global breakthrough for the groove-reggae ensemble with the release of their debut album Based On A True Story on Sonar Kollektiv (SK072CD / SK072LP). Following triumphant concerts throughout Europe late 2005 came a special highlight: Based On A True Story took the title „Album Of The Year“ at taste-maker extraordinaire GILLES PETERSON's Worldwide Music Awards. While a new studio album is still in the production phase FAT FREDDYS DROP now release a DVD which looks back on the success of recent times. The centerpiece of Fantastic Voyages Vol. 1 is concert footage recorded in various locations during the „World-Cup“ Europe Tour 2006: in London, Edinburgh, Ireland, Manchester, Berlin, Barcelona, Paris, as well as at the „Algarve Summer Festival“ in Portugal. These concert recordings are enriched with events that took place at each of the stops on the tour. So as well as excerpts from FAT-FREDDYS-DROP tunes such as Cay’s Crays, This Room or Roady one also witnesses how at an unmissable football game with FAT FREDDYS DROP, JAZZANOVA's ALEX BARCK sets up a prank against the Sonar Kollektiv team which is also caught on camera... But the DVD doesn't just have magic from the stage and amusing as well as entertaining impressions of rock'n'roll life on the road to offer. The many extras include three video clips of the album tracks Ray Ray, Roady and Wandering Eye – the latter being, and one would expect nothing less from this band, an award winning production. Another extra on Fantastic Voyages Vol. 1 is a look at the serious "day" Job of one FAT-FREDDYS-DROP member. Keyboarder and analogue synth wizard DOBIE BLAZE that is, has his own prime time cooking show, Kiss da Cook, on New Zealand TV. One clip on the DVD, accompanied by a previously unreleased FAT FREDDYS DROP number, shows him cooking Cockles Galicia. And last but not least there are two „Hidden Gems“ to be found in the DVD menu: a complete live version of the underground hit Midnight Marauders, played at the „Algarve Summer Festival“, and as a final highlight there's one more solo spot from JOE DUKIE, who tries to settle a truly meter long hotel bill with a passionate cover version of OTIS REDDING's (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay... In a word, the Fantastic Voyages Vol. 1 DVD offers a fascinating insight into the tour life of a fantastic live band. Now that the 2007 concert season is right on the doorstep, its a great appetizer for upcoming concerts by FAT FREDDYS DROP.
