Berlin 7" dance-hall, reggae and dub label Best Seven is living up to its name with another knockout release, Big Disgrace, by FROST & WAGNER. OLIVER FROST and ADRIAN WAGNER have long been part of Berlin’s thriving reggae scene. They have previously released on Gstone, been remixed by AKUFEN and been played on GILLES PETERSON's World Wide BBC radio show. This is another prime slice of roots music from the Best Seven massive.
The lead track Big Disgrace is a fat sounding funky dancehall number. The vocals are supplied by REBELLION who sings with passion about "justice and the human race". Yes mi bredren, this is quality conscious roots reggae and when you hear it you won’t be able to resist the urge to get on your feet. This track is up their rivaling greats of dancehall like BOUNTY KILLER.
KABUKI and CLEVELAND WATKISS have worked together before on a Best Seven release, After The Fire (
SB7013). KABUKI aka JAN HENNIG has also had tracks on Crippled Dick Hot Wax! and Compost Records and the ATJAZZ remix of his track Tempest was even included on NITIN SAWHNEY’s FabricLive mix (FABRIC 30). Their new track Speed Of Sound was originally released on Hamburg drum and bass label Precision Breakbeat Research. Considering KABUKI’s real is a labour of love is drum n’ bass, the man who has recently had tracks on V Recordings sublabel Liquid V, certainly has no problem producing top quality reggae with a soul vibe.
FROST & WAGNER deliver other top new tune, Like A O, on the B-side featuring the wonderful PAUL ST. HILAIRE who has had tracks on K7!, Rephlex, Tigerbeat6, Rhythm & Sound as well as Bpitch Control (he even co-wrote a song on the recent MODESELECTOR album Hello Mom). PAUL ST. HILAIRE was the man behind another Berlin Techno-Dub label Basic Channel. He used to work under the name NIKIMAN and his presence on FROST & WAGNER’s superb Like A O really makes the tune.
This stunning 12" concludes with an instrumental of Big Disgrace. You can get lost in the delays in the instrumental B-side of Big Disgrace. The heavyweight horns section carry the melody on this excellent dub version of an already cooking number.
Sonar Kollektiv sublabel Best Seven has done it again with Big Disgrace by FROST & WAGNER. Where DANIEL W BEST (executive producer on this 12") finds the time between co-organising the Inner City party nights with DJ DIXON and booking JAZZANOVA to run such a great little label is not clear, but praise Jah he does! There is no disgrace at all for FROST & WAGNER on this brilliant 12" - Big Disgrace is a winning record.
