CHOIR OF YOUNG BELIEVERS is the solo project of LAKE PLACID member JANNIS NOYA MAKRIGIANNIS. He has already released an EP to rave reviews in the press through Danish label Tigerspring. The single Sharpen Your Knife was pick of the week on the biggest Danish national radio station. It even spent the maximum 8 weeks at No. 1 of the Danish indie chart. Riot by CHOIR OF YOUNG BELIEVERS previously appeared on the Sonar compilation Secret Love 4 (SK160CD) and this 2 track digital release is a taster for his first album which is coming out early next year.

The songs for the EP were written in Berlin, Copenhagen and in a small town on the Greek island Samos. They have been arranged and produced by ANDERS RHEDIN, who has played a big part in creating the fresh sound of these songs. Musically, CHOIR OF YOUNG BELIEVERS is located somewhere between low key folk and grandiose indie pop, ambitiously combining a cool Nordic distance with a true presence and vitality. In contrast to IAN CURTIS, CHOIR OF YOUNG BELIEVERS' upbeat ballad Apart claims thats it's death, not love, that will tear us apart. And somehow his vows make more sense than JOY DIVISION's. This jovial tune bears similarities to ANIMAL COLLECTIVE. While lead track, Sharpen Your Knife, is a glorious anthemic pop number. JANNIS NOYA MAKRIGIANNIS' striking voice is reminiscent of ASH's TIM WHEELER - this beautiful voice and cool presence that JANNIS always delivers almost makes his lives shows a veritable treat.

The melodies are simple and beautiful while the orchestral arrangements surprise and overwhelm the listener. Musically, there are references to ROY ORBISON, THE BEACH BOYS, PIXIES and HANK WILLIAMS, but CHOIR OF YOUNG BELIEVERS has a unique sounds and a bright example of innovative pop music with depth and quality. COYB performed at ROSKILDE, the largest festival in Europe, in 2007. In early 2008 COYB won 2 major awards in Denmark as “talent of the year” and “hope of the year”. JANNIS is currently adding the finishing touches to his debut full length album which is due for release in January 2009 on Sonar Kollektiv. Going by these two tracks, the album is well worth looking forward to.
